Chicago Fire’s Got Didier Drogba’s Rights, and They’re F***ing Golden

Word on the interwebs is that the Chicago Fire, who own Chelsea striker Didier Drogba’s MLS “Discovery Rights,” are now in discussion with the Montreal Impact, who are interested in actually signing the player.

Some may call it extortion, I’m calling it a brilliant coup by the Fire front office who are upping Drogba’s value, and then judo-flipping that value into a better negotiation leverage to ship him off to Quebec.

In other words…

So, what’s a used Drogba worth these days? Kelley Blue Book does not have a standard Drogba trade-in price, but Transfermarkt does, and puts Didier at exactly a €1 million.

So… who on l’Impact is worth ~€1 million for a straight-up deal?  I would say one of these fella’s (plus Don Garber funny-money)…

Considering the Fire’s midfield is already crowded and they are desperate to shore up either the front line or the back line, I’d say Nigel Reo-Coker or Jack McInerney would be the most interesting options.  Impact center back Laurent Ciman is asking for a little too much in return, but it’s possible the Fire could deal someone in alongside Drogba in order to get the All Star in exchange.

  1. ESPNFC reports the Fire received double the money that New York City FC paid the Galaxy to get the rights to sign Frank Lampard. The Fire then went and claimed Gilberto off waivers from Toronto FC.

What do you think?
